While we are now marking sixty years since the Second Vatican Council, it will be important not to look at it simply as an historical event. This council, like all church councils, is best understood as a
living reality. A council is not simply received once-and-for-all, but needs to be received in every generation so that it might shape the future. This is the task we face. What questions do we bring as we re-read the council documents? How do we go about the reception process in 2023?

“Vatican II: Its Reception after 60 years”
Fr Gerard Kelly is a priest of the Archdiocese of Sydney and lecturer in Theology at the Catholic Institute of Sydney. His academic work has focused on questions of ecclesiology and sacramental theology. He is currently involved in several ecumenical dialogues: co-chair of the Australian Lutheran–Roman Catholic Dialogue; chair of the Faith and Order Commission of the National Council of Churches in Australia; and a member of the Methodist–Roman Catholic International Commission. He has pastoral involvement with the community at St Mary’s parish, Concord, and the Chinese Catholic Community at Eastwood and Lindfield.
