Christopher James Geraghty
Chris worked as a solicitor from the 1970’s until he went to the bar in 1984. After serving as a judge on the Compensation Court of NSW, in February 2004 he joined the District Court of NSW where he continued working as a judge, mainly in the criminal jurisdiction until his retirement in 2009. Before studying law, he was ordained in 1962 at the age of twenty-three, and worked as a priest attached to the Sydney Archdiocese for about fifteen years. He has a master’s degree from the Ecole Catholique in Paris, and a doctoral degree in theology from the Theological Institute of Sydney where he lectured in sacramental theology and liturgical studies. He left his teaching post and his priestly ministry in October 1976. Chris has published three memoirs of his time as a seminarian and priest. The last of these Dancing with the Devil: A Journey from the Pulpit to the Bench was published in 2012. His most recent work Jesus – The Forgotten Feminist was published in 2018.
Chris was born in October 1938 and married in October 1977. He and his wife have two adult boys and three grand-children. He lives in gentle retirement, attending his grand-children, reading novels and poetry, researching and writing on the origins of misogyny in the Catholic tradition, as well as walking and meditating.
