The Call To Be Lecture Series

February 12 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

LAUDATO SI

Presented by  Winston Higgins

Laudato Si’ is Pope Francis’s 2015 encyclical on climate change. He addressed it not only to Catholics but to people of good will everywhere, and it has become an important resource for those in the Church as well as much further afield who fear for the future of human civilisation and the biosphere as a whole. Francis pulls no punches in tracing the source of the current climate emergency. Now, ten years later, his analysis retains its currency and even greater urgency. In our three two-hour sessions we will discuss just why this is so. We encourage participants to acquire a copy of Laudato Si’ and read into it beforehand.

Winton Higgins is a graduate of Sydney, Stockholm and London Universities. He briefly practised law in Sydney during the latter 1960s before undertaking postgraduate studies overseas and becoming an academic in political theory and sociology at Macquarie University (where he became head of discipline) and UTS.

Extramurally he has taught Buddhism and insight meditation since 1995 and remains a senior teacher for Sydney Insight Meditators. He taught annual courses for the Aquinas Academy for four years until the 2020 pandemic. Apart from his academic publications, he has published two historical novels, a Holocaust-themed travel diary, and two books on contemporary western Buddhism.
