is pleased to announce the following lecture series
In the beginning was the Logos… Philo of Alexandria, Emperor Marcus Aurelius, and John the Evangelist all use this Word/Logos –so incredibly rich in meaning — in their writings. This course will look at how the doctrines of Platonism, Stoicism, Judaism and Christianity find a common ground in the Word but also a huge diversity in its usage.
Philo was a Hellenic-Jewish philosopher, a contemporary of Christ, who gathered together ideas from the various schools of Greek philosophy and the Old Testament to form his own teachings. For Philo, God is the sum and the exercise of the divine energies.
Living at Ephesus, the Evangelist John would have been familiar with the Greek philosophers and their use of Logos to mean the mediator between God and the world. How much did it influence John’s choice of the term Logos in the Prologue to his Gospel? This fascinating question will form the basis of our course.
This is a 3-part course on 4, 11, 18 September 2024.
